The main Portuguese SAD's: comparative study between the economic and financial viability and the success of their sports clubs

    Get PDF
The object of this paper is to assess the profitability of the four leading Portuguese Sociedades Anónimas Desportivas (SADs)1 by comparing the economic and financial data of each SAD with the respective sports results of the clubs attached to these SADs. The methodology followed the various steps inherent to this type of paper, all the while adopting both a qualitative and quantitative approach, i.e. a hybrid approach. Initially, we took on an interpretative paradigm, as the elements necessary for research arise from the observation and analysis of data. We began by increasing our scientific knowledge on the subject of analysis: SADs, sports results and balanced financial structures. This was followed by a characterisation of the sector and a thorough analysis of both the accounts and the sports results of the SADs and the clubs. Thereafter, we crossed the data from these two analyses and completed the project with a number of key measures to achieve both financial and sporting success. Finally, it was possible to conclude that a Sociedade Anónima Desportiva can, in fact, achieve satisfactory economic, financial and sporting levels if a number of guiding principles are adopted. Principles that, when interconnected through a virtuous cycle, generate greater revenue and consequently profits, contributing to a balanced financial structure, conducive to more victories and naturally titles, which in turn provide increased revenue, thereby bestowing coherence to the virtuous cycle

IEVCC - A Mesh Managed Network for Electric Vehicle Charging

    Get PDF
The implementation and management of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points in parking spaces (whether in multifamily condominiums or in private company parking lots) presents a challenge, since the available contracted power may be insufficient for the building devices needs and for EV chargers to work simultaneously. The available power is limited to a fixed value generally determined by the expected peak power consumption of the building. An increase in the contracted power leads to unwanted costs and, sometimes, this is not possible without a complete rework of the electrical installation at even higher costs. The available power is not fully used all the time, since not all the buildings devices are always working simultaneously. These spare power can be monopolized by a mesh network of chargers, taking advantage of the full contracted power without increasing costs. In this work we present a manager of a mesh network of chargers that can distribute the available power to an array of chargers based on several conditions, e.g. load balancing, priority of chargers or charging.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A Low Cost and Highly Parameterizable Energy Meter

    Get PDF
The popularity of the Internet of Things (IoT) and demand for smart devices, particularly in the smart home industry, has increased in recent years. As a result, there is a growing need for affordable and functional energy meters to measure electric energy consumption, mainly due to the rise of electric vehicle (EV) sales and energy prices in Europe. In this paper, we present the development of an energy meter that accurately measures voltage, current, active power, frequency, and power factor. The energy meter is designed to provide information to an intelligent EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), allowing users to "plug and forget." We describe the hardware and software of the latest energy monitor version, including an ESP8266 microcontroller, a PZEM-004TV3 energy meter, an OLED display, and a power supply circuit board. We also present some results of the energy meter’s use, highlighting its functionalities and benefits. The paper concludes with insights into a new version planned for the energy monitor. This paper will be of interest to researchers and industry professionals working in the IoT and smart device fields, as well as those interested in energy efficiency and EV charging infrastructure.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Detonation wave solutions and linear stability in a four component gas with bimolecular chemical reaction

Publicado em "Mathematics of energy and climate change : International Conference and Advanced School Planet Earth". Series : CIM series in mathematical sciences, vol. 2, ISBN 978-3-319-16120-4We consider a four component gas undergoing a bimolecular chemical reaction of type A1 + A2 = A3 + A4, described by the Boltzmann equation (BE) for chemically reactive mixtures. We adopt hard-spheres elastic cross sections and modified line-of-centers reactive cross sections depending on both the activation energy and geometry of the reactive collisions. Then we consider the hydrodynamic limit specified by the reactive Euler equations, in an earlier stage of the chemical reaction, when the gas is far from equilibrium (slow chemical reaction). In particular, the rate of the chemical reaction obtained in this limit shows an explicit dependence on the reaction heat and on the activation energy. Starting from this kinetic setting, we study the dynamics of planar detonation waves for the considered reactive gas and characterize the structure of the steady detonation solution. Then, the problem of the hydrodynamic linear stability of the detonation solution is treated, investigating the response of the steady solution to small rear boundary perturbations. A numerical shooting technique is used to determine the unstable modes in a pertinent parametric space for the considered problem. Numerical simulations are performed for the Hydrogen-Oxygen system and some representative results are presented, regarding the steady detonation wave solution and linear stability.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Using the fuzzy linguistic computing in the evaluation of the value creation in an innovative product

    Get PDF
Although innovation usually involves the assumption of high risk levels, it assumes itself as a vital tool for growth, enhancing value creation representing a competitive advantage. The aim of this chapter is to propose a methodology to evaluate the potential for value creation in innovation of a new product, relatively to intangible and tangible assets. For intangible assets the proposed methodology combines a multiple criteria decision-making method with an adaptation of Tai and Chen (2009) model using 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic approach. This methodology was applied to the EToll product developed by the Portuguese company Brisa Innovation and Technology. It was concluded that the benefits that most contributed to value creation are the development and entrepreneurship of national companies and a better cooperation with suppliers and partners. The EToll also allowed a significant reduction in operating costs in the company. The originality of this study is based in the challenge for business managers to assess the real impact of new products based not only on financial reports, but also in terms of intangible assets and also, how to consider the more appropriate qualitative dimensions to evaluate the performance of intangible assets resulting from innovation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Portuguese tourism market: A model

    Get PDF
In Portugal, tourism is one of the most important economic sectors. Recently, with the development of the global crisis, particularly reaching the southern European Countries, this sector has strengthened and reinforced its importance due to the important rents got by Portuguese regional and local agents. Consequently, this topic is now particularly relevant. In this study, factors explaining demand, supply and prices are discussed. At macroeconomic level, it is seen how they contribute to model the Portuguese tourism market. A relationship among the variables is analyzed and its modeling is represented mathematically. The model gives an important contribution to show the importance of these variables and relationships in the determination of macroeconomic aggregates in the Portuguese tourism market.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Do the Small Numbers in the Quark Mixing arise from New Physics?

We put forward the conjecture that the small numbers in the VCKMV_\text{CKM} matrix, are generated by physics beyond the Standard Model. We identify as small numbers VubV_{ub} and the strength of CP violation, measured by ImQ|\text{Im}Q|, where QQ stands for a rephasing invariant quartet of VCKMV_\text{CKM}. We illustrate how the conjecture can be realised in the context of an extension of the Standard Model where an up-type vector-like quark is introduced leading to a realistic spectrum of quark masses and an effective VCKMV_\text{CKM} in agreement with experiment.Comment: 15 pages, 1 tabl
